In a major step toward strengthening community-based leadership and institutional resilience in South Africa’s non-profit sector, the South African Youth Project (SayPro) facilitated an intensive Governance for NPOs training programme for 38 officials representing 9 Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs). The programme was delivered under the sponsorship and quality assurance of the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA), and it forms part of a wider mission to professionalise and uplift the operations of civil society actors throughout the country.
This initiative brought together leaders and staff from nine active and diverse NPOs operating in youth care, community development, skills development, education, substance abuse rehabilitation, and social services. While each organisation has a unique area of focus, they all face a common set of challenges: navigating complex governance requirements, maintaining financial transparency, and ensuring long-term sustainability while serving high-need communities.
List of Participating Organisations
The training included participants from the following nine organisations:
- Budulogang Child and Youth Care Organization – Focused on child protection, care, and psychosocial support for vulnerable youth.
- L17 Skills Development Hub – Specialising in vocational training and empowerment for unemployed youth and adults.
- Bakubung Community Development Organization – Supporting economic and social development initiatives in rural communities.
- Tlhabologan Development Project – Engaged in education, food security, and entrepreneurial development.
- Seitebaleng Boitumelo Educare Centre – A community-based early childhood education facility promoting holistic development.
- Beyonce Educare Centre – Providing foundational education, care, and nutrition to young children in underserved communities.
- Ezinye Ithuba Drug Rehab, Anticrime, Gangsterism and Skill Development – Working at the intersection of rehabilitation, reintegration, and youth crime prevention.
- Education of Hope Africa NPO – Focused on youth education, tutoring, and community upliftment.
- The Message – A community-focused organisation that supports spiritual development and social outreach.
Together, these organisations play a vital role in transforming communities, especially in areas where access to formal support structures is limited. However, many of them struggle with governance issues due to limited training, informal structures, and resource constraints.
The Rationale for Governance Training
The governance of non-profit organisations is essential for their credibility, accountability, and long-term survival. Weak governance often leads to mismanagement, donor mistrust, regulatory non-compliance, and ultimately, service delivery failures. To address these risks and build a more resilient NPO sector, SayPro designed and implemented a training programme that focused specifically on Governance for NPOs—a structured, outcomes-based course tailored for real-world application in grassroots organisations.
The goal was to equip participants with essential skills in:
- Understanding South African legal and compliance frameworks for NPOs
- Defining and applying governance principles, including board roles and responsibilities
- Strengthening financial accountability and oversight
- Developing policies and internal controls
- Building strategies for sustainability, risk management, and stakeholder engagement
- Enhancing ethical leadership, transparency, and organisational accountability
Delivery Approach and Learning Experience
The training was delivered over multiple days in a facilitated, learner-centred environment, balancing theoretical concepts with hands-on exercises and scenario-based simulations. SayPro’s facilitators—who bring a wealth of experience in non-profit development, public policy, and education—used participatory methods to ensure that the content was both accessible and directly relevant to the organisations’ day-to-day operations.
Each participant received comprehensive materials, including governance toolkits, policy templates, regulatory guides, and reporting frameworks. By the end of the training, NPO representatives were able to draft governance action plans, identify compliance gaps, and create strategies for board development, improved documentation, and community accountability.
Impact and Participant Feedback
The training produced immediate and measurable benefits across all participating organisations. For many, this was the first time they received structured training in organisational governance. Participants left with increased confidence in their roles, a better understanding of their legal obligations, and actionable steps to strengthen their organisational structures.
“We now have the language and tools to build a proper governance system. This will change how we work with our board and donors,” said a participant from Education of Hope Africa NPO.
“Our organisation has been passionate, but informal. SayPro showed us how to formalise our processes without losing our community spirit,” shared a team leader from Tlhabologan Development Project.
“Before this, we did not fully understand our responsibilities as board members. Now we know how to lead with integrity,” added a representative from Budulogang Child and Youth Care Organization.
Participants also appreciated the opportunity to connect with peers from other organisations, fostering collaboration, peer learning, and future partnerships across the non-profit ecosystem.
SayPro’s Broader Commitment to the NPO Sector
SayPro continues to position itself as a leader in skills development, youth empowerment, and organisational capacity-building. As an accredited training provider and development partner, SayPro has worked with hundreds of NGOs, government departments, and community organisations across the country. This training programme is part of a broader effort to professionalise the civil society sector by offering ongoing support in compliance, leadership development, digital transformation, and programme design.
SayPro’s model is not only about training but about transformation. By offering follow-up support, post-training mentorship, and digital governance resources, SayPro ensures that participating organisations are not only trained—but supported for real change.
Looking Forward
Building on the success of this cohort of 38 trained NPO officials, SayPro plans to expand the programme in collaboration with HWSETA and other sector partners. Future activities will include:
- Regional replication of the training across all provinces
- Capacity-building workshops in financial literacy and fundraising
- Governance clinics and compliance audits
- An online learning platform for continuous professional development
- Certification pathways for NPO leaders
SayPro invites other NPOs, funders, and development partners to collaborate in scaling this impactful governance initiative.
Conclusion
The need for good governance in the non-profit sector cannot be overstated. In a time of growing social and economic pressure, South Africa’s NPOs must be equipped not only with passion but with structure, accountability, and strategic leadership. SayPro’s training of 38 officials from 9 organisations is a bold and necessary step toward a stronger, more sustainable, and more impactful civil society.
