In a focused effort to strengthen civil society and improve the effectiveness and sustainability of community-based organisations across South Africa, the South African Youth Project (SayPro) successfully delivered an intensive governance training programme to 25 selected officials from various Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs). This initiative was carried out under the support and guidance of the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA), as part of a broader national agenda to upskill leaders in the non-profit sector.
This training is a milestone for both SayPro and the participating organisations. By equipping leaders with essential governance knowledge and compliance tools, the programme seeks to build a more accountable, transparent, and impactful non-profit ecosystem in South Africa.
Background and Purpose of the Programme
The non-profit sector in South Africa plays a vital role in addressing social, health, youth, and economic challenges, particularly in areas where government services are limited or overburdened. However, many organisations within the sector struggle with internal governance, limited knowledge of regulatory frameworks, and inadequate management capacity.
To address these issues, SayPro identified the need to develop leadership and governance skills among NGO and NPO staff, particularly those in key decision-making roles. In partnership with HWSETA, SayPro designed and implemented a Governance for NPOs training programme, which is both accredited and aligned with national skills development goals.
The main objectives of the programme were to:
- Educate leaders about legal compliance and statutory regulations applicable to NPOs in South Africa
- Enhance the capacity of board members and senior staff to perform their governance roles effectively
- Introduce financial oversight principles and best practices in financial management
- Build skills in organisational strategy, sustainability planning, and ethical leadership
- Create a network of empowered leaders committed to the principles of good governance and transparency
Programme Structure and Methodology
The training programme ran over several days and adopted an interactive, learner-centred approach. Participants came from diverse backgrounds, representing NGOs and NPOs working in areas such as youth development, healthcare, education, rural empowerment, substance abuse rehabilitation, women’s rights, and community upliftment.
Each training module combined theoretical learning with real-world case studies, group discussions, and practical activities. Topics covered included:
- South African legal and regulatory framework for NPOs
- Roles and responsibilities of governing boards and executive leadership
- Financial accountability and interpreting financial statements
- Strategic planning and risk management in non-profit environments
- Stakeholder engagement, donor relations, and impact reporting
- Ethical leadership and organisational integrity
Participants also received handbooks, governance toolkits, compliance checklists, and templates that they could take back to their organisations and implement immediately.
Participant Feedback and Outcomes
The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many highlighted that the training helped them better understand their governance responsibilities and revealed areas where their organisations needed urgent improvement.
“The training made us realise that governance is not just about compliance; it’s about sustainability and credibility. We feel more equipped to lead our organisation with purpose and transparency,” said a participant from a township-based youth development NGO.
“For years we were passionate but unstructured. This programme helped us put systems in place, which will improve how we serve our community,” shared another leader from a rural NPO focused on women’s health.
Beyond personal development, the programme fostered collaboration and networking among participating organisations, promoting peer learning and long-term support.
SayPro’s Role and Commitment
SayPro continues to position itself as a key enabler of development in South Africa, with a strong focus on youth, community, and organisational empowerment. With over a decade of experience delivering training, support services, and capacity-building initiatives, SayPro leverages partnerships like this one with HWSETA to reach under-resourced organisations that often fall outside mainstream support.
[Insert name and title of SayPro Executive or Programme Manager] stated:
“We are proud to support these 25 remarkable individuals and their organisations. By strengthening their governance capabilities, we contribute not only to their organisational effectiveness but to the overall resilience of South Africa’s non-profit sector. Good governance enables greater impact.”
This initiative aligns with SayPro’s broader mission to promote transparency, sustainability, and social justice through education and development.
Looking Ahead
Following the success of this initial training cohort, SayPro plans to expand the programme to reach more NGOs and NPOs across all nine provinces. The next phase will involve follow-up mentorship, on-site governance audits, and digital governance toolkits to support continuous improvement.
SayPro also aims to advocate for more systemic support for non-profit governance training, including through donor partnerships, corporate social responsibility funding, and public-sector collaboration.
